Fillmore West

San Francisco, California

With a 1970 show at the Fillmore West, we really do not have to say anymore; you know the night is going to be awesome. But things get even funkier in the second set when, just out of Good Lovin’, someone joins in – folks who were there insist it was someone random from the audience who jumped on stage. The interlocutor somehow gets the boys (was he also on an instrument?) into a down-home hoe-down jam unlike anything else. As the jam gets into some serious psychedelic bluegrass territory, the guest suddenly busts out in some hard to decipher lyrics. The Grateful Dead site reports the lyrics as:

Slow it down [where it too far]

Gotta slow it down [where it should be]

Slow everything down [out in the country]

Gotta slow it down [keep it slow, cat]

[Can you give it pony truckin’ for a beer, gal]

[Go out and find it wrapped in sin]

[If you don’t mind one brand, six will do]

Seven’s a lucky number […]

Whoooo

[The price is up] where I belong

Singing them old country songs

Get everybody singing country songs

Get everybody back where we belong

Get everybody back where we belong

Get everybody singing songs

Hey

Whatever is getting sung, it is a unique and fun little interlude in an already outstanding night.

The guy who jumped on stage was apparently singer/songwriter and all round good guitarist David Bromberg. He recorded an album in ’74 with Jerry,,Phil, Bill and Keith among the sidemen entitled Wanted Dead or Alive. Just sayin’
